How to select High Quality Amethyst

As you know, amethysts are crystals that are truly pleasing to the eye due to their mysterious, beautiful appearance. They are crystals that nature has bestowed many benefits on mankind.

The word amethyst comes from the Greek word 'Ametusthos', which means "not drunk". Proving that the meaning is correct, this stone has been used to prevent drunkenness and overindulgence.

Throughout history, this crystal has been used as a symbol of healing and cleansing benefits. People have used it as a source of healing because of its soothing effect on the mind and body.

Now I will introduce you how to select a high quality amethyst.

How to select and identify the quality of amethyst

  • Color and purity

Color:  The darker the color of amethyst, the high quality of the amethyst. If you look closely at natural amethysts, you will see that there are color bands, i.e. uneven variations in shades of color, while synthetic crystals have a single color. If this is not obvious enough, you can also put it in water and observe it.

Purity: When observed in the sun, natural crystals can be seen as faint tiny uniform cotton wool-like material, i.e. cotton, cracks, inclusions, etc. While fake crystals are crystal clear and other general AA grade crystals, the size of impurities in about 1 cm, AAA grade is relatively rare. And pay particular attention to pure transparent crystal, its high magnification if you can see bubbles, it is artificial crystal.

  •  Feel and weigh

Feel: Natural amethyst has thermal conductivity and is much better than molten crystal and glass crystal imitation products. So you can also feel it with your body or touch it with your hands. No matter which season it is, natural amethyst will give people a cold and cool feeling.

Weight: When selecting a natural amethyst, we can also weigh it directly in our hands. Amethyst has a specific gravity of 2.65, which is greater than glass, plastic, and other materials. So to weigh it, you can find a glass ball of the same size as a reference for comparison.

  • Look polish and process

Polishing: The polish will directly affect the value of amethyst. The hardness of amethyst is 7, and the hardness of diamond is 10, so polishing is usually done with diamond to make the surface smooth. Natural amethysts with high hardness will not show traces when scratched gently, while inferior amethysts will not.

Craftsmanship: For amethyst jewelry, such as necklaces, we need to see whether the eyes are symmetrical, whether there are small cracks on the sides, and whether the walls of the holes are clear and transparent. A well-made crystal product should be carefully designed to bring out the crystal's transparency and look noble and elegant.
