How was Yooperlite discovered
Yooperlite is the name of the mineral that was brought to the worldâs attention in 2018 by Erik Rintamaki, an agate collector and beachcomber. âYooperâ is a nickname for people from Michiganâs Upper Peninsula (U.P.), and âliteâ refers to the mineral sodalite. Erik stumbled upon the fluorescent Yooperlite while searching for agates with an ultraviolet lamp at night on the shores of Lake Superior.
Why Yooperlite glows
The fluorescence phenomenon originates from the luminescent centers of impurity sulfur and iron.
